May 23, 2012 – A crash has closed Interstate 81 South at the Plainfield Exit in Cumberland County.
State police said a rental truck was towing a pickup truck in the northbound lanes before it sideswiped another pickup headed northbound.
Both vehicles went into the median where the rental truck overturned and then slid into oncoming southbound traffic, police said.
Police, who initially reported the incident as a head-on crash, later said no southbound vehicles were involved in the collision, which occurred at around 9:30 a.m.
At least one driver was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for what police described as life threatening injuries.
I-81 South is closed between Exit 44 to Route 465 in South Middleton Township and Exit 37 to Route 233 in Penn Township.
The northbound lanes were also closed at around 11 a.m.
Traffic was being detoured.
