Many Social Security Disability recipients have no other form of income than these benefits. Therefore, it is important that they know when to expect their benefit check. The Social Security Administration (SSA) maintains a schedule for when it pays benefits.
The Harrisburg Social Security Disability attorneys at Schmidt Kramer explain the payment schedule for disability benefits below. If you have been approved for disability, this schedule tells you when you can expect your check.
If you have been denied Social Security Disability or are not receiving your benefits, contact our Harrisburg Social Security Disability attorneys for assistance.

When Do Disability Payments Begin?
Once a claimant’s application for benefits is approved, his or her first benefit is paid for the sixth full month after the date of impairment. For example, if a claimant was found to be disabled on January 15, 2018, his or her benefits will begin in July, and the first check will arrive in August. Social Security Disability payments are made in the month following the month for which they are due.
Benefit Schedule by Birth Date
Before 2017, all Social Security Disability recipients received their checks on the third Wednesday of every month. However, benefits are now paid based on the disabled person’s birth date. Dependents who claim these benefits based on another person’s employment record are paid based on the birth date of the person whose employment record was used for benefits.
Disability payments are paid based on the following schedule:
- Second Wednesday for birth dates between the 1st and the 10th of the month
- Third Wednesday for birth dates between the 11th and the 20th of the month
- Fourth Wednesday for birth dates between the 21st and the 31st of the month
For easy viewing, the SSA maintains a calendar for Social Security Disability payments.
In 2018, disabled individuals with birth dates between the 1st and the 10th will be paid on:
- January 10
- February 14
- March 14
- April 11
- May 9
- June 13
- July 11
- August 8

Those with birth dates between the 11th and the 20th will be paid on:
- January 17
- February 21
- March 21
- April 18
- May 16
- June 20
- July 18
- August 15

Those with birth dates after the 20th of the month will be paid on:

One exception to these dates is if the recipient has been receiving disability benefits since May 1997 or earlier. These recipients continue to be paid on the third of each month. If the third falls on a weekend, the benefits will be paid the Friday before.
The SSA requests an allowance of three additional mailing days after these dates. If you do not receive your check within three days after your payment date, call the SSA.
Supplemental Security Income Payment Schedule
Those who are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive their benefits on a different date than those who receive Social Security Disability Insurance. This needs-based benefit is paid on the first of the month. If the first falls on a weekend or a holiday, the SSA will send payment the weekday before.
